Bohemian Rhapsody - Freddie leaves Paul (2018)

Editing

  • There are jump cuts the whole conversation between Freddie and Paul when they talk to each-other, which ultimately could symbolise how they have now drifted apart, and Freddie doesn’t really want to be associated with Paul anymore so they’re not seen in the same shot. (Unless Paul is behind Freddie in which case he’s still out of focus which shows how he’s fading as a part of Freddie's life).
  • Adding to the point above, Freddie never turns to face Paul
  • Zooms in on Freddie’s back (Kens burns effect?) which is kind of building up to him finally ‘snapping’ and telling Paul all thats wrong with him.
  • Zooming in on Pauls face as he progressively looks more and more worried as Freddie is becoming aware about how bad of a person he is. (Only this time he doesn’t have a ‘breaking point’ as per se, but he yells “I didn’t mean it” only to watch Freddie walk away afterwards).
  • Pauls face is still being zoomed in on until we jump cut too Freddie walking away.
  • Slowly zoom out as Freddie walks away
  • Fades to black on Paul as he walks back inside in defeat

Lighting

  • As Mary’s car drives off at the begging, the only sort of light source goes with it so were left with the natural moon light as there seems to be no street lights
  • Moonlight is pretty much the only light we have in the scene
  • Freddie seems to have light shining infant of him which creates a glowing effect around his head which gives an angelic/Ethereal look to Freddie to show how he’s breaking free of the dark period he’s been in, whilst on the contrast, the lighting on Paul makes his face look dark which could symbolise his bad/evil nature and ways.
  • The lighting stays natural throughout so as Freddie walks away he gets harder and harder to see
  • The moonlight seems to create a glowing haze in the direction Freddie is walking in which could represent a new start for him

Sound

  • Diegetic sound of rain is a constant throughout in the background
  • As the scene comes to a close, non-diegetic music starts to fade in. This music could be considered contrapuntal as the music is quite an upbeat song and we’ve just watched a quite sad/serious talk between Freddie and Paul, but yet it might not be because the upbeat music can sort of reflect the freeing/happy moment of Freddie walking away from the toxic Paul
  • Non-diegetic music suddenly gets really loud as Freddie starts his walk away. This could signify how Freddie has completely blocked Paul out of his life and although the music is non-diegetic, it can almost imply he ‘cant hear him’.
  • Soundtrack - Under pressure by Queen + David Bowie (Progressive/Art Rock)
