International film - Opening sequence ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ (Del Torro, 2006)

SCENE 1)

-Dolly movement at a canted angle

-The camera dolly’s left which can signify going back in time (and maybe political views)

-We were level with the girl lying on the floor

-At the outset-eye-level we sake the narrator’s perspective

-Close up, then zooms into extreme close up

-Colour is symbolically representing the duality of the two worlds (War was dark and gloomy,

and the countryside was bright and saturated)

SCENE 2)

-Birds eye shot to establish setting

-Over the shoulder view

-Transitions into a POV

-We see Ofelia at eye level whilst we see the mother at a lower angle which makes us feel more

     equal with Ofelia

British film - Fish Tank (Andrea Arnold, 2009)

-Low budget look/aesthetic as the camera seems to be hand held and shaky (mirrors the ‘chaotic’ nature of real life and ordinary people/brewing conflict)

-Music and sound driving narrative device

-Diegetic - The music is ACTUALLY happening in the scene (the characters can hear it)

-Contrapuntal - Music or sound is the opposite to the situation (Diegetic music is contrapuntal)

-Long shot allowed us to see the dancing

-As she gets more and more into dancing, no one else is in the frame, just her. Then her mother shows up and disrupt it

Review

Pans Labyrinth - emphasis of situation

Fish Tank - Filming is complimentary to the films atmosphere - emotions/hand help

-Space and camera

-Production on hand held - realism/British realism
